Is Trader Joe’s Hair Mask Color Safe? (Explained)

is trader joes hair mask color safe

Trader Joe’s Hair Mask is fantastic for those people that want to breathe a bit of life into their hair. Of course, more and more of us are now opting to have our hair colored. This does beg the question; is Trader Joe’s Hair Mask color safe?

Trader Joe’s Hair Mask does not have sulfates in it, which does mean that it should be color-safe. However, it is worth bearing in mind that the product does not say that it is color-safe. This means that if you use it, you are going to be taking a risk.

Let’s explain.

As we said; Trader Joe’s Hair Mask does not claim to be color-safe. This means that if you are putting it in your hair, you may find that the color wears out, although it may not disappear completely.

That being said, the lack of sulfates in Trader Joe’s Hair Mask products means that the risk of your hair color being worn down should be pretty slim, if not non-existent.

We know that there are plenty of people that have used this product without any issues, and we see no reason why the same wouldn’t happen to you. The risk is there, but it is minimal.

It is likely that Trader Joe’s doesn’t state that their products are color-safe because they don’t want their customers to believe that the product is color-safe and suddenly all of the color in their hair washes away. It is a liability thing.

Remember, everything that you put in your hair has the risk of stripping the color, even if the risk is rather low.

Does Trader Joe’s Hair Mask Have Sulfates?

At the time of writing, there are no sulfates in any of the Trader Joe’s Hair Mask products. However, do bear in mind that this is something that could change in the future.

We would always encourage you to look at the list of ingredients on any product that you buy to make sure that there are no sulfates in there.

Obviously, the major benefit of not having sulfates in the product means that it is, broadly speaking, color-safe.

When a hair product starts to break down the color in your hair, most of the time it is due to sulfates in the product. This is why, in the previous section, we claimed that Trader Joe’s Hair Mask was color-safe even though it doesn’t explicitly state that it is color-safe.

The lack of sulfates in the product will also benefit your hair in other ways too. For example, the big benefit is that the product is not going to be drying out your hair.

If you leave sulfate products in your hair for a long period of time, then it could start to sap up the natural oils. It may make your hair dry and brittle, leading to split ends. This is not something that you need to worry about with this hair mask.

Finally, the product is not going to leave your scalp feeling dry and irritated. We know that there are a lot of people out there that have used products like this only to see their scalps rather itchy and raw.

Thankfully, it doesn’t seem as if anybody has had that issue with this product. Although, do bear in mind that is because of the lack of sulfates.

If you are allergic to any of the other ingredients in the product, then we suggest that you don’t use it. Once again, you are going to need to check the ingredients list here.

Can You Leave Trader Joe’s Hair Mask In Overnight?

You can leave the product in overnight but, honestly, there isn’t really any need to leave it in for that long. The vast majority of people that use this product should be fine leaving it in for a couple of hours.

The only people that really seem to benefit from leaving the hair mask in overnight are those that have rather dry hair anyway.

The hair mask will help to breathe a little bit of life into it. Although, even then, leaving it in overnight is still going to be a pretty long time to have it in your hair.

What Happens If You Leave a Hair Mask on Too Long?

We cannot possibly tell you what would happen if you leave the Trader Joe’s Hair Mask in for too long. This is because every hair mask is different.

What we can do, however, is give you an overview of what may happen. This is why it is so important that you always use a hair mask as per the instructions. Never use a hair mask for longer than the instructions state.

There are three main issues here:

  • Hair masks will prevent the hair from breathing.
  • Hair masks are often loaded with proteins.
  • Hair masks will have a load of chemicals in them (in the case of Trader Joe’s they are natural products, but not everything is great for your hair).

This can potentially lead to a weakening of the hair. It is fine if you are only leaving it in your hair for too long once or twice.

However, if it starts to become a regular thing, then you may find that your hair starts to become dry and brittle. You may even notice that you have a lot more split ends.

As many people have stated before us; while hair masks are highly beneficial to your hair, you can have too much of a good thing. So, make sure that you always use your hair masks in moderation.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe’s Hair Masks do not explicitly state that they are color-safe, but we see no reason why they wouldn’t be color-safe. You will be taking a small risk when you use them, though.

Always follow the instructions for the hair mask if you plan to use it. This means avoiding leaving in overnight if at all possible.

You may benefit from adding a few extra hours to the leave-in time if you have dryer hair.
