Does Trader Joe’s Spicy Chai Have Caffeine? (Answered)

Does Trader Joe's Spicy Chai Have Caffeine

People absolutely love the Spicy Chai sold at Trader Joe’s, especially since the product has now been relaunched as ‘Spiced Chai’. As the name suggests, this product contains tea. If you are trying to avoid caffeine, you may be wondering ‘Does Trader Joe’s Spicy Chai have caffeine?’.

Trader Joe’s Spicy Chai (sold as Spiced Chai) does have caffeine. Although, it isn’t a huge amount of caffeine. It will have far less than coffee. It is impossible to state exactly how much caffeine will be in the spicy Chai since the customer will prepare it themselves. After all, the Spicy Chai is sold as a concentrate.

Let’s talk more about the Spicy Chai product, as well as some alternatives that may be available.

Overview of Trader Joe’s

If you are after unique, delicious, and affordable products then Trader Joe’s is one of the best grocery stores in the US. Their hundreds of stores may be tiny, but they are packed to the brim with all sorts of wonderful products that you can’t get anywhere else.

This is because Trader Joe’s prides itself on being unique. It prides itself on sourcing quality products from manufacturers all over the world, products that other grocery stores wouldn’t even bother to keep.

Take their Spicy Chai, for instance. This is a Chai concentrate (you dilute it when you are making drinks, possibly Chai Latte).

No other major grocery store would even bother to stock own-brand Spicy Chai, and it is normally something that is reserved for more specialist stores. Trader Joe’s? Well, they have it on the shelves almost constantly!

Trader Joe’s Beverage Selection

Trader Joe’s has one of the most eclectic ranges of beverages out of all the major grocery stores. They have a Spicy Chai mix. They have sparkling green tea. There are tons of different teas and coffees.

They have Jalapeno-flavored limeade (yep, that is a really odd one), and pretty much every soft drink that you can imagine (this will always be own-brand Trader Joe’s stuff). On top of all of this, most of their stores will have alcohol for sale!

Their alcohol selection isn’t really own-brand stuff. Instead, Trader Joe’s buys in from some smaller breweries, so you even get a unique mix of alcohol too.

Basically, if you are looking for something unique to drink, then Trader Joe’s is worth checking out. Some of their products are a bit of an acquired taste, but a lot of the stuff that they sell is brilliant!

Spicy Chai and Its Ingredients

Chai Tea has its origins in India. It is traditionally brewed black tea (always brewed hot), and blended with a wealth of different spices.

Chai tea always has those warmer wintery type flavors. So, ginger, cinnamon, and a dash of cloves. This makes it the perfect winter drink, although there are plenty of people that will also drink it cold during the summer months too.

Every company and person that brews Chai will have their own unique recipe. Even Trader Joe’s has their own unique recipe. According to its marketing materials, the company takes great pride in the gingery flavor of its Spicy Chai. These are the ingredients that you will find in Trader Joe’s Spicy Chai:

  • Filtered water
  • Sugar
  • Black tea
  • Cinnamon
  • Cardamom
  • Clove
  • Allspice
  • Nutmeg
  • Black Pepper
  • Rosemary
  • Ginger

As mentioned, the overwhelming taste behind the spicy Chai from Trader Joe’s will be the ginger. Trader Joe’s does change their recipe from time to time, so it is always worth checking out different versions of the product.

Trader Joe’s Spicy Chai Caffeine Content

The best place to check whether Trader Joe’s has Spicy Chai in stock is on their website. However, unfortunately, while Trader Joe’s does state that their product contains caffeine, it doesn’t actually say how much caffeine there is. Therefore, reaching out to the customer support team is probably the best idea.

The reason why Trader Joe’s does not list caffeine content is because caffeine content will depend on how the tea has been brewed. Thier Spicy Chai is sold only as a concentrate. The more you use, the more caffeine there will be in the drink.

Results: Does Trader Joe’s Spicy Chai Have Caffeine?

Trader Joe’s Spicy Chai does have caffeine in it. As we said, it is impossible to know exactly how much caffeine will be in your drink. Each bottle of Spicy Chai is 16oz, and there is 80mg of caffeine per 4oz of the bottle.

So, there isn’t really a whole lot of caffeine when you start mixing it with your drink base (normally steamed milk). There is certainly going to be less caffeine than in a cup of coffee or even a can of Coca-Cola.

Of course, if you are looking to avoid caffeine, then Spicy Chai may not be for you.

Alternatives to Trader Joe’s for Caffeine-Free Spicy Chai

While Trader Joe’s does have several caffeine-free teas and coffees in their range, they do not have a caffeine-free version of their Spicy Chai. If you want a caffeine-free Chai, then you will need to head to either your local Walmart, tea retailer or buy online.

Although, these Chais won’t be exactly the same as the Trader Joe’s version. They will have a slightly different taste, and most of them won’t be concentrates.

We can assure you that there is only a small amount of caffeine in the Spicy Chai, though. So, if you are only avoiding caffeine because you don’t want it to perk you up, you won’t have to worry too much about a single mug of Spicy Chai, as long as it is properly diluted.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe’s Spicy Chai does have caffeine in it, but the amount of caffeine will be dependent on how much of the product you use.

Unfortunately, Trader Joe’s does not sell a caffeine-free Spicy Chai. If you want something caffeine-free, then you will need to head to a larger grocery store or shop online.
